Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey has welcomed the announcement of Karanga Mai Young Parents’ College and Early Learning Centre as a finalist for the Education Focus Prize in the 2016 Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards.
“Our young people deserve every opportunity to reach their potential and to contribute to their communities no matter their circumstances,” Doocey said.
Doocey, who said he was overwhelmed when he heard some of the students’ personal journeys during the school’s recent prizegiving, applauded Karanga Mai’s commitment to further the educational opportunities of its students, with many students going on to further education or training.
“At the same time as pursuing their own educational achievements, parents have the security of knowing their little ones are receiving a great early childhood education. As a young dad, I know how important that is,” Doocey said.
The Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards celebrate excellence in education, with category winners receiving $20,000 and the winner of the Prime Minister’s Supreme Award receiving an additional $30,000. The awards will be held on Monday 13 June at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
