Christchurch to host FIFA U-20 World Cup
Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey has encouraged Canterbury to get along to the FIFA U-20 World Cup which kicks off on Sunday 30 May.
“Christchurch is one of seven host cities for the tournament which will be showcased to a global audience of 170 million. Christchurch Stadium will host nine games, including a second round game, a quarter and a semi-final,” Doocey said.
“The FIFA U-20 World Cup is another chance on the back of the highly successful staging of ICC Cricket World Cup to further boost New Zealand’s reputation for hosting major international sporting events.
“It is a fantastic opportunity to host some of world football’s most talented youngsters and see the next wave of superstars in action. 582 U-20 players have gone on to participate in the FIFA World Cup – 30 of them in World Cup winning teams.”
Doocey said 7,000 international visitors, including players, support staff and media, were expected to attend the tournament.
The Government has contributed $5.5 million to the tournament
