Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey has welcomed 70 more police staff for Canterbury.
“Waimakariri electorate, like Canterbury, has seen considerable population growth, which reflects the increased numbers of police officers. With the regeneration of our town centres, our status as a great place for families and the green light for our regeneration zone plans, we have seen our communities grow – and we expect that growth to continue. Waimakariri electorate is currently the third fastest-growing electorate in the country. This announcement, as part of Government’s $500 million Safer Communities package, will see our community resourced for this growth,” Doocey said.
“As local MP, I meet regularly with our local hardworking police women and men to understand the issues on the ground. This investment is not just about the numbers but will also equip our police women and men with new resources and tools, and provide a new 24/7 non-emergency police number,” Doocey said.
Doocey said from his understanding an increase in population has not necessarily meant an increase in crime but it would be up to the District Commanders to see which towns were sent the new recruits.
