An extra $6.6 million investment by Government into Kaiapoi High School will deliver a first class, modern facility that will support Waimakariri’s growth, MP Matt Doocey says.
The extra investment, on top of the $15.5 million already announced for the project, would create an extra 10 new learning spaces and provide for 320 extra students, Doocey said.
The school’s roll currently sits at around 780.
“This investment future-proofs the school as a modern learning environment that will meet the needs of its students, which is not only good for the students but for the wider community,” Doocey said.
“Living and working in the electorate as I do, it’s hard not to be excited at the number of significant projects currently underway in our schools. These reflect the growth of Waimakariri electorate, which is now the third-fastest growing electorate in the country. As the local MP, I meet with a range of people in my role, from business people to community groups to people on the street, who are upbeat that Waimakarri is heading in the right direction and is on track,” Doocey said.
Doocey said no other Government had committed so much to school property investment.
“We’ve recently celebrated Karanga Mai winning the Focus Prize in the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards; Pegasus Bay School and Karanga Mai Young Parents’ College being granted two years’ funding to trial innovative teaching practices; and the news that more 18 year olds in Waimakariri electorate are achieving their NCEA Level 2 qualification,” Doocey said. “I think it’s safe to say that Waimakariri offers excellent educational opportunities for our families.”
