Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey welcomes a new child-centred approach to protect New Zealand’s most vulnerable children and young people.
The package, announced in Budget 2016, includes additional support for vulnerable children and also targets education, health and reintegration services for offenders.
“It’s really good news for Waimakariri electorate to see an additional $43 million in funding targeted at children most at-risk of not achieving in education,” Doocey said. “I know from visiting the pastoral care initiatives at Kaiapoi Borough School with Health Minister Jonathan Coleman last year that there is a very clear link between our children’s wellbeing and their performance at school. Our young people deserve every opportunity to reach their potential, no matter their circumstances.”
As Deputy Chair of the Social Services Select Committee, Doocey said it was great to see investment into at-risk children’s achievement following on from the substantial investment into new classrooms in Waimakariri schools.
