Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey has launched a petition in support of a third lane southbound on the Waimakariri Bridge to make the morning commute in to Christchurch less congested and travel times for commuters more reliable.
“Many of my constituents have contacted me about frustrating congestion and unreliable travel times for commuters into Christchurch each morning for work. They want a third southbound lane on the Waimakariri Bridge to be considered as a way of improving their commute into the city,” Doocey said.
“I think it’s about time the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) listened to Waimakariri commuters and agreed a third lane southbound should be built into the existing Northern Motorway projects as part of the contract with the Christchurch Northern Corridor Alliance.
“I encourage Waimakariri commuters to sign the petition for a third lane southbound on the Waimakariri Bridge to make the morning commute in to Christchurch less congested and commuter travel times more reliable,” Doocey said.
Doocey said he intended to present his petition to the NZTA at the start of April.
“In April the NZTA will be meeting with the Greater Christchurch Urban Strategy Implementation Committee to discuss the possibility of a third lane southbound. The more signatures we get, the louder the message to the NZTA will be,” Doocey said.
